Profile

Georges Carrey, born in Paris 1902, died in Knokke 1953.

Friend and pupil of Nicolas de Stael, the famous French abstract painter, who died himself in 1954 by suicide.

We own with my colleague Jan de Maere ,the famous art expert and collector, almost the complete collection of Carrey's abstract works he started to paint after WWII. Carrey died 15 days before his first exhibition organized for him by the Leo Castelli from that period, Mr. Pollack of the Galerie Ariel in 1953.

This exceptional collection of abstract art after WWII, is actually purchased by the most fervent collectors in Europe and Carrey is considered as a real master in the complete sense of these words even if he remained unknown for almost 50 years.
Mr. Arry Van Weyenbergh is composing a "catalogue raisonne". These paintings, gouaches , indian ink, charcoals, show a revolutionary innovation in the abstract art world after WWII. These pieces shown here date from 1945-1953. The white period representing the end of his oeuvre. Many American so Motherwell were making the same type of art work but almost 10 years later than Carrey.
