Voyage 2 in Hopper landscapes: Lee Shore 1941

All sails out Fascinated by boats - the artist grew up in Nyack, a small town on the Hudson specialized in shipbuilding -, Hopper likes to detail here sailboats whose sharp contours contrast with the moving softness of the water and undulating grass. Swollen by the wind, their smooth and bright white sails evoke the peaceful atmosphere of a regatta or a sea trip. But their hulls pushed towards the coast, lean dangerously under the effect of the swell. In the sky, a swirling cloud, light as a breath, echoes the white sails, as a reminder of their fragility.
