Testing scientifically can provide valuable evidence during the authentication process.

what we analyse in a painting with science

Crucial Considerations Regarding Scientific Testing Only Sometimes Verifies Authorship:

It is unusual for scientific tests to establish the authorship of a particular artist.

With one caveat, X-rays have the potential to uncover hidden features, such previously undiscovered artworks created by the same artist.

Main Objective:

Finding out how old things are, such as canvas, woodpanel, composite panels, arches paper etc

Paint pigments and other components.

Crucial Issue:

Were these items available when the artist was working?

Key Points to Keep in Mind:

Just because two works of art are chronologically compatible doesn't mean they were both made by the same artist.

In sum:

Though they cannot pinpoint the precise creator, scientific examinations can confirm that a work of art is from the correct historical period.

1-Principles of Pigment Analysis

Pigments have a lengthy life cycle and can be reused.

Pigment analysis's limitations:

It is NOT a means of determining the exact date of pigment production or use in artwork.

It only establishes the initial availability of a specific pigment type.

Findings from pigment analysis:

The artwork could not have been made before the earliest known availability of the pigment, as indicated by the cut-off date.

Conclusion: While pigment analysis can help determine an approximate date, it cannot determine the painting's specific date or artist.

2/ X-Ray Evaluation for Art Verification

Operation Process

Like in reverse photography, X-rays can see through paintings and provide a negative image of the darker parts.

This method exposes previously unseen paint layers, enabling specialists to examine:

Does the artist's recognized methodology inform the approach of preparation and painting?

Is there a harmony between the artist's style and secret compositions?

Crucial Elements of X-Ray Analysis Kilovoltage (kV) Function:

The x-ray beam's intensity is measured in kilovolts.

Like altering the screen's contrast, increasing the kV exposes more underlying layers.

Radiologists "paint" an image of the underlying layers using kV.

Function of Exposure Duration:

Minimal exposure times reveal hidden depths.

The surface or lower layers are illuminated by longer exposures.

Dedicated Tools:

Final Thoughts X-ray analysis is an effective method for preserving artwork while revealing previously unseen layers, analyzing the artist's technique, and verifying the piece's validity.

3. The Use of Carbon Dating for the Verification of Artwork

The Definition

Scientifically speaking, radiocarbon dating is a way to determine the age of organic objects like ivory, bones, wood, etc

Synthetic materials are incompatible, same as metallic items or stoneware..

Useful for the Arts

Canvas, linen, and wood panels are frequently dated using this method.

Limitations

You can't get an exact date from carbon dating.

A probability range spanning several decades is used to express the results.

Works better on things that are older, such artifacts that date back thousands of years.

Minimum Standards

For testing, a tiny bit of the substance is needed.

In summary

While carbon dating can only provide approximations when it comes to the age of organic items, it is a great tool for estimating the age of older artworks and artifacts.

4. Authenticating Paintings using Fingerprints How to Authenticate Fingerprints Where to Find Usable Fingerprints:

Discovering high-quality fingerprints on the surface of the artwork.

Collecting Fingerprints from the Artist:

Gathering authentic artist fingerprints for use in comparison.

Comparison of Fingerprints:

Comparing the artist's known fingerprints to those on the artwork for analysis.

Providing information:

Gathering information for an in-depth report that covers: The painting's context.

The process and findings of the fingerprint analysis and search.

Assurance that the testing process was thorough and can be trusted for liability.

I always thought that science should be necessary to counterbalance the human expert.
