The Investigator’s Mindset

Serious provenance research requires skepticism.

Not cynicism.

Not negativity.

Skepticism.

Researchers must learn to ask uncomfortable questions.

What evidence is missing?

Who benefits from this narrative?

Can this claim be independently verified?

What would happen if this document did not exist?

What evidence supports the conclusion beyond the story itself?

The objective is not to disprove authenticity.

The objective is to determine whether the historical record can withstand scrutiny.

A provenance that survives difficult questions becomes stronger.

A provenance that depends upon avoiding difficult questions becomes weaker.

The provenance Illusion part 4

The Market’s View

Collectors often imagine provenance as an academic exercise.

The market views it differently.

To the market, provenance is risk management.

Strong provenance reduces uncertainty.

Reduced uncertainty increases confidence.

Confidence supports value.

Weak provenance increases uncertainty.

Increased uncertainty reduces confidence.

Reduced confidence affects liquidity, financing, insurance, and resale opportunities.

In practical terms, provenance is not merely history.

It is a financial asset.

Or a financial liability.

The Provenance Illusion

The greatest mistake a collector can make is believing that provenance automatically proves authenticity.

It does not.

A strong provenance supports authenticity.

A weak provenance may undermine it.

But provenance alone rarely settles the question.

Authentication requires convergence.

Historical evidence.

Technical evidence.

Stylistic evidence.

Scientific evidence.

Documentary evidence.

The strongest conclusions emerge when all of these elements point in the same direction.

Collectors who rely exclusively on provenance often discover this lesson too late.
