A surrealist work by Picabia sold for 10 million euros in Paris, a new record
The first auction dedicated to the Surrealists in Paris reached a total amount of nearly 33 million euros on Wednesday, including a record sum for a work by Picabia , announced its organizer, Sotheby's. "We are particularly proud to have set a new world record for Picabia, most certainly the most regularly honored 20th century painter since Sotheby's organized modern art sales in France" , commented Thomas Bompard, director of this sale.
One of Francis Picabia's most famous Transparencies, the Pavonia canvas was sold for 10 million euros, thus setting a record for the artist (previously 8 million euros). This work was designed in 1929 for the major decoration project for the Parisian apartment of art dealer Léonce Rosenberg, explains Sotheby's. Another painting by Picabia, Nu de dos , 1940-42, traded for €3.3 million.
Belgian painter René Magritte was represented by 4 paintings, including two unpublished at a public sale: The Ghost Landscape sold for 2.1 million euros and The Courtesan's Palace, bought for nearly 2 million euros. “ Surrealism is 100 years old and has never seemed so young. Magritte is today as sought after as Warhol, and the market demand for Picabia equals that of Jeff Koons,” said Thomas Bompard when presenting the sale.
This also included a " special section devoted to surrealist women with major works, long unpublished, by Dorothea Tanning (Mêlées nocturnes, 1958, 567,000 euros), Leonor Fini (Sphinx for David Barrett, 1954, 119,700 euros) and Toyen (Secret room without lock, 1966, 1.5 million euros)” , added Sotheby’s. In early March, René Magritte's Empire of Lights was sold in London for 59.4 million pounds (about 71.5 million euros), an auction record for a work by the artist.
