Iconoclasts at Orsay museum will be sued
This Saturday, an environmental activist from Riposte Alimentaire attacked Claude Monet's painting "The Poppies" at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, leading to an arrest. The police reported that they had arrested "someone who covered a painting and then glued his hands to the work." Around 10 a.m., the events took place. The activist reportedly placed a red sticker on the painting before touching the picture with her hand and attaching it to the wall. The activist, who was born in 2002, was accused of "defacing or deteriorating cultural property exhibited, deposited or kept by a person carrying out a mission of general interest or in a building used for worship committed in a meeting," according to the Paris prosecutor's office to TF1/LCI. For this reason, the activist was placed in police custody. According to the prosecutor's office, the young woman who was detained is "known to the justice system for offences committed on the occasion or on the sidelines of previous demonstrations". The matter is sent to the Ministry of Justice by Rachida Dati. Culture Minister Rachida Dati swiftly responded on social media X, saying, "Once again, a cultural institution and a work of art are being targeted by iconoclasts". "There is absolutely no justification for these criminals destroying works of art. She was adamant that "it must stop" and declared her intention to report "this new form of delinquency" to the Ministry of Justice. "A restorer examined and treated the piece, and it was hung up behind glass. The public can now view the show in its entirety, according to the Musée d'Orsay's management, who also declared that a complaint had been filed. The young woman's actions were captured in an online video that the Riposte alimentaire collective posted, portraying her as a "committed citizen". We watch her affixing an adhesive poster depicting a red-hued vision of the end of the world onto the impressionist landscape of flowers. "If nothing more is done, we're going to end up looking like this terrible image! She remarked, "At +4°C, hell awaits us," referring to the spike in temperature that the French government has forecast will occur by 2100. She was wearing a T-shirt with the words "+4°C." For a few months now, climate activists at Riposte alimentaire have been stepping up their efforts. Specifically, they stated that they threw soup at the glass protecting the Louvre's "Mona Lisa" in January, then went after Claude Monet's "Spring" artwork in Musee des Beaux Arts de Lyon in February.
