These works, the value of which has not been disclosed and some of which " , will enter the national collections of the Picasso Museum in 2022.
franceinfo: To whom did these paintings belong and why did you give them to the State?
Olivier Widmaier-Picasso: These canvases belonged to my mother. For some, we had seen them in exhibitions, sometimes at home and others had been sleeping in a chest for more than forty years. It was she who decided to make a donation to pay for the rights associated with a donation to her children. A dation is the remittance to the State for the settlement of a tax debt, a tax or a tax, works of art, manuscripts, something that has a high artistic value . My mother had always thought that after the dation she herself had experienced in relation to her father, she had to prepare for the future and she had always told us: "There will be things that are memories of family, family portraits, and there will be things for the museum, for your donation". She had anticipated things for a long time and it happened to say, this one is for the State. What makes that we are three children and that we have the impression of being four.
One of the paintings, "Child with a lollipop sitting under a chair" (1938), does it represent your mother?
It is a canvas that has several meanings. That's when my grandfather painted a lot of very colorful paintings of my mother, but this one is black and white. I think that behind the image of this child, who could be my mother because that's the model he has in front of him, he reveals a turning point. We are in the middle of the Spanish Civil War, there is the rise of fascisms and I think that this child who is eating a lollipop, who is in a sort of innocence, is hiding under a chair because perhaps the future does not will not be so beautiful and will not be in color.
Do you have any idea of the value of these paintings?
They are worth a lot of money. We are in a proportionality of art for art. On one side a donation to children, on the other a donation which is a proportion of this whole. That's a lot, and even more.
Do you know why your grandfather didn't make a will?
My grandfather never made a will, perhaps out of superstition. He told his lawyers: "If I make a will I die tomorrow." I also think he was letting things happen. He had four children [from different women], he couldn't recognize them all because he couldn't get a divorce and the law before 1972 prevented a married man from recognizing his children from a woman other than his wife. .
