Dramatic rocks This painting is one of the few Hopper works devoid of any human construction. Like a theater projector, the dazzling summer sun transforms the coastal landscape of Cape Ann (Massachusetts peninsula) into a dramatic setting with striking contrasts. Impressive granite formations, of which the painter greedily emphasizes the round shapes and the rugged volumes, cast their oblique shadows on the green grass, which, represented by smooth tints, evokes a felted carpet stretching gently towards the sea. With his lonely characters trapped in empty and motionless settings, his scenes of disturbing clarity, and his dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, the American realist painter Edward Hopper (1882 - 1967) inspired the greatest filmmakers. At the Fondation Beyeler, in Switzerland, an exhibition brings together sixty-five of his paintings, watercolors, and drawings of landscapes
