Ten specific lots in forthcoming sales from 3 to 21 November 2026, excluding Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Phillips. Selected for provenance, artistic quality, scholarship, rarity or an estimate worth investigating—not as guaranteed bargains. The first planned public VWART newsletter issue is Monday 4 January 2027; this research edition is not a public release.

1. Dirck Hals — Men Smoking and Drinking in an Interior

Artcurial | Paris, France | 10 November 2026 | Lot 24 | Estimate €40,000–60,000Direct lot: https://www.artcurial.com/en/sales/6583/lots/24-a

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?A lively Dutch Golden Age genre painting on a single oak panel, with a remarkably traceable history: the Kellner collection, a 1929 Berlin sale, a Prague collection in 1935, a 1956 Musée de l’Orangerie exhibition and inclusion in the 2003 Dirck Hals monograph. Documentation, rather than a fashionable signature alone, makes this worth studying.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?Verify the full 1935–45 ownership chain and the published attribution. Request panel-stability and restoration reports, inspect old labels and compare the all-in cost with recent Dirck Hals results.

2. Attributed to Maria van Oosterwijck — Composition with Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers on an Entablature

Artcurial | Paris, France | 10 November 2026 | Lot 25 | Estimate €100,000–150,000Direct lot: https://www.artcurial.com/en/sales/6583/lots/25-a

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?A large, elaborate seventeenth-century still life with potentially significant upside if the new attribution is substantiated. Its documented auction identities changed: attributed to Adriaen van Utrecht in 1979, Dutch School in December 2025, and now attributed to Maria van Oosterwijck. That change is the central research question, not proof of a bargain.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?Treat ‘attributed to’ literally. Commission independent specialist and technical opinions, reconstruct provenance, inspect restoration and determine the 2025 transaction history. The estimate could be expensive if the attribution fails; include premiums and possible resale discounts.

3. Godfriedt van Bochoutt — Almanac, Playing Cards and Memento Mori

Artcurial | Paris, France | 10 November 2026 | Lot 23 | Estimate €4,000–6,000Direct lot: https://www.artcurial.com/en/sales/6583/lots/23-a

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?An unusually accessible seventeenth-century vanitas still life, oval oil on canvas, with a distinctive combination of an almanac and playing cards. Artcurial records that Fred Meijer confirmed the attribution from photographs in an email dated 8 October 2026.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?A photographic opinion is not a physical examination. No detailed ownership chain appears in the published entry. Obtain the opinion, provenance, ultraviolet images, condition report and full premium/shipping calculation before bidding.

4. Mariano Rossi — Triumphant Flora

Dreweatts | Newbury, Berkshire, UK | 3 November 2026 | Lot 48 | Estimate £30,000–50,000Direct lot: https://auctions.dreweatts.com/auctions/9806/drewea1-10693/lot-details/158e5707-c928-403f-a84d-b4db00d6ad8c

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?A monumental circular Baroque canvas by a painter celebrated for the Galleria Borghese ceiling. Its scale and theatrical composition offer museum-level visual impact at a mid-market estimate. Dreweatts reports a photographic attribution confirmation by Professor Riccardo Lattuada.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?The title’s iconography is interpretative, and the Naples palace provenance is explicitly ‘by repute.’ Request the expert’s written opinion, structural and restoration records, dimensions, transport quotations and a realistic buyer-premium calculation.

5. Simeon Solomon — Somnus; Amor; Voluptas; and Mors

Dreweatts | Newbury, Berkshire, UK | 4 November 2026 | Lot 256 | Estimate £30,000–50,000Direct lot: https://auctions.dreweatts.com/auctions/9807/drewea1-10704/lot-details/61c1a115-62a0-408c-8da6-b4db0115926f

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?Four related allegorical chalk drawings, circa 1880, by a distinctive artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite circle. The auction house traces a possible descent through the Abraham family, cousins of the Solomons. The set has more historical coherence than four unrelated sheets.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?The family descent is presented as possible, not proved. Check each sheet’s attribution, inscriptions, light damage, paper repairs and framing. Determine whether the four sheets can be conserved and displayed together without disproportionate cost.

6. John Varley — Two Views of the Interior at Boston Hall, Lincolnshire

Dreweatts | Newbury, Berkshire, UK | 4 November 2026 | Lot 219 | Estimate £1,200–1,800Direct lot: https://auctions.dreweatts.com/auctions/9807/drewea1-10704/lot-details/1ba9cfc0-714a-4ac8-9603-b4db01158417

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?A pair of intimate interiors in pencil, ink and watercolour from the Russell Worby collection. This is a credible low-budget entry into the Golden Age of British watercolour, with a named collecting context and a subject less commonplace than a generic landscape.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?The house’s feature does not establish a full historical provenance or detailed condition. Inspect both sheets for fading, foxing, mounting and later retouching; calculate fees, conservation and framing relative to the modest estimate.

7. Andrea Appiani — Seated Male Figure, circa 1782–1783

Finarte | Milan, Italy | 5 November 2026 | Lot 62 | Estimate €2,000–3,000Direct lot: https://drouot.com/it/l/35485843-andrea-appiani-milano-1754-milano-1817-seated-male-figure

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?A squared preparatory drawing in pencil, charcoal and white lead, linked by Finarte to Appiani’s early decorative work at Milan’s Royal Palace. The connection to an identifiable surviving mural scheme is potentially more valuable intellectually than the modest estimate suggests.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?Confirm the compositional match and attribution independently, then examine paper support, old mounts, losses and white-lead passages. The direct lot link is on Drouot; its displayed buyer charges are 31%, before delivery.

8. Rubens Santoro — Verona, Piazza delle Erbe

Finarte | Milan, Italy | 5 November 2026 | Lot 69 | Estimate €14,000–18,000Direct lot: https://drouot.com/it/l/35485850-rubens-santoro-mongrassano-1859-napoli-1942-verona-piazza

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?A signed oil on canvas showing a recognizable historic Italian square, rather than a more routine Venetian view. The subject’s relative scarcity within Santoro’s familiar market makes comparison with similar urban scenes worth pursuing.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?The published provenance is only ‘private collection’; an old frame label identifies the place but does not authenticate the painting. Request high-resolution details, restoration report, comparable sales and the 31% Drouot-listed buyer charges plus transport.

9. Johann Koerbecke — The Annunciation, circa 1470–1480

Lempertz | Cologne, Germany | 21 November 2026 | Lot 1005 | Estimate €200,000–300,000Direct lot: https://www.lempertz.com/en/catalogues/lot/1300-1/1005-johann-koerbecke.html

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT?An exceptionally documented late-Gothic panel, once the reverse of a single altarpiece wing with lot 1006. The two sides were separated in 1936 and have now been reunited for viewing. Lempertz records museum stewardship and restitution to heirs in December 2025. An unusually important historical object, though not a cheap one.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?The catalogue itself discusses attribution to Koerbecke and/or workshop. Confirm the 2025 restitution and clear title documents, condition after panel splitting, and sale mechanics: lots 1005 and 1006 are offered separately and then together. Budget accordingly.

10. Jacob Philipp Hackert — River Landscape, 1774

Lempertz | Cologne, Germany | 21 November 2026 | Lot 1055 | Estimate €20,000–25,000Direct lot: https://www.lempertz.com/en/catalogues/lot/1300-1/1055-jacob-philipp-hackert-1.html

WHY WOULD I LOOK AT IT? A signed and dated early Roman-period landscape, recorded in the Nordhoff–Reimer Hackert catalogue. Provenance includes the Schäfer collection and a 2000 Düsseldorf auction, after which it remained in a German private collection. Scholarly visibility and an accessible estimate make it worth comparing with later Hackerts.

WHAT WOULD CONCERN ME?The composition is a variant of a 1771 picture, not a unique topographical view. Check comparative quality, condition, possible lining and restoration, catalogue references, and all-in fees before treating the estimate as attractive.

THREE I WOULD RESEARCH FIRST

  1. Andrea Appiani, lot 62: a modestly estimated early preparatory drawing linked to a surviving Milanese decoration.

  2. Dirck Hals, lot 24: substantial published and exhibition history, subject to rigorous 1935–45 provenance checking.

  3. Jacob Philipp Hackert, lot 1055: an early dated landscape with catalogue documentation at a manageable estimate.

THE ART EXPERT’S VIEW

The real opportunity is not the cheapest estimate; it is the gap between what is documented and what the market has priced. The attributed Oosterwijck is a research case, not a confirmed rediscovery. Koerbecke is historically extraordinary, but its attribution nuance, restitution documentation and paired-lot procedure matter more than its headline estimate. Condition, title, export, VAT, buyer’s premium, online surcharges and shipping can erase an apparent discount. I have not physically inspected these works or authenticated them. The three Dreweatts lot URLs were supplied by the auction house but blocked automated retrieval (HTTP 403); their titles, estimates, dates and numbers were cross-checked against Dreweatts’ published specialist features. Finarte’s two lots were cross-checked against its catalogue and their direct Drouot listings.

7. Andrea Appiani — Figura maschile seduta (Figure masculine assise), vers 1782–1783

9. Johann Koerbecke — L’Annonciation, vers 1470–1480

10. Jacob Philipp Hackert — Paysage fluvial, 1774
